Developers press ahead with Colombia resort
Despite the global economic headwinds, US developer Vertigo Theme Parks continues to push ahead with its efforts towards opening a theme park in Colombia later this year.
Florida-based Vertigo began opening certain sections of the Vertigo Theme Parks-Buga resort earlier this year, but since then the global recession has cast a shadow over the official opening date.
"These tough financial times probably make even the most optimistic person wince at the thought of starting a new business," said Jerry Merola, chief financial officer of US consultancy Amusement Entertainment Management.
Yet Vertigo CEO Kevin Johnson says the company remains on course for a 2009 opening: "Our feasibility study shows we are directly on track, with literally millions visiting the area already and tens of millions located with just a few hours flight time, the analysis shows clearly that the market opportunity exists, and that an opportunity is there."
Vertigo Theme Parks-Buga is located in the Colombian region of Estancia, which is located just two miles from the famous pilgrimage city of Buga, and Johnson said the already-established influx of tourists would ensure the park's success.
