Germany’s largest theme park, Europa-Park, has cut the ribbon on its latest attraction: Alpenexpress VR-Ride.

Located in the Austrian-themed section of the resort, passengers are able to enjoy this new adventure using virtual reality glasses, where futuristic worlds unfold before their eyes.

Developed through co-operation between VR Coaster, Mack Rides, Mack Media and Samsung, guests on board the Alpenexpress VR-Ride are subjected to changes in speed, rushing air and gravitational forces are they travel around elaborately themed worlds.

This completely new ride sensation is due to the precise synchronisation of the VR headset with the actual roller coaster ride. The ride uses sensors to orient the film to the speed and position of the roller coaster, enabling the real movements to be experienced in the virtual world.

“The VR glasses create an immersive experience that would be almost impossible to surpass. For the first time, we are able to place an attraction in any themed world and seamlessly increase the intensity of the experience for visitors,” explains Steffen Kottkamp, director of Mack Creative at Europa-Park.

“The future of the roller coaster lies in a combination of real physical forces and appropriate thematic content. Using VR, we can create a much more elaborate and interactive themed world.”

The launch of Alpenexpress VR comes as Europa-Park is planning an “unforgettable” programme of special events for Christmas.

This year, the park will be transformed into a festive haven, with 2,500 local fir trees being imported, along with a host of Christmas theme elements, 3D projections, glitter balls and fairy lights.

To celebrate the resort’s 40th anniversary year, Europa-Park is also installing an ice-staking rink, Christmas market and 2,500sq.m indoor winter wonderland for children.
